I had lilies(Asiatic) in the garden for the first time this year. Now that they have died down and the stalks are brown, do I cut them down or just leave them?
Lilies in winter?
Whatever floats your boat. I usually cut the tops off after they finish flowering so they won%26#039;t try to manufacture seed, leaving about 3 or 4 feet of stem and leaves to strengthen back up. I%26#039;ll cut the rest off late in the fall when I do a general cleanup of everything, but that is pretty much just for aesthetics. It doesn%26#039;t hurt to leave the stems until spring if you don%26#039;t mind the messy look.
Reply:Remove the dead then cover with a 4 ins layer of organic compost
Reply:Won%26#039;t hurt to remove the dead at ground level.
Reply:when mine are at the point where yours are, i take my pruner and clip them off at ground level. it looks much neater in your flower bed and then in spring the bulbs don%26#039;t have to fight there way through the old stuff...
Reply:just leave
Reply:You can do either - but I cut mine down when they are dead, cos you need to do it at some point before they grow again next year. They look a lot tidier when you cut back the dead growth.
Reply:If you cut them back it all looks that much neater, if not then they stems will naturally rot in to the soil.
