I adopted a cat from a shelter back in June (Jade). She%26#039;s around 2 years old. We got her declawed (don%26#039;t yell at me, I know it%26#039;s terrible, the apartment made us, which was stupid...). We got another cat ABOUT a month and a half or so ago (Lily) and she%26#039;s 6 months old. We live in a 1-bedroom apartment so it wasn%26#039;t really feasible to keep them in separate rooms for 4 weeks like I%26#039;ve heard you%26#039;re supposed to or whatnot. We did it for about three days. Lily is not declawed (the apartment doesn%26#039;t even know Jade is because they DIDN%26#039;T FOLLOW UP ON IT but made us do it anyway...go figure...that%26#039;s why we didn%26#039;t do it to Lily). I don%26#039;t want to give EITHER up, obviously - Jade%26#039;s my boyfriend%26#039;s baby and Lily is mine. MOST of the time, they%26#039;re fine. However, a lot of the rest of the time they are ALL OVER EACH OTHER and won%26#039;t stop hissing, biting, growling, etc. Lily has claws and I don%26#039;t want Jade to get hurt, but Jade bites HARD and I don%26#039;t want Lily hurt. Will they ever get along?
Cats don%26#039;t get alone...advice please?
First, you may want to keep Lilly%26#039;s claws trimmed. That should help even up the odds.
As for bonding, cats can take a LONG time to adjust to each other. That having been said, most I have known have eventually found a way to coexist, if not love each other. One method I used on a new addition of my own recently was to give them a treat (in this case tuna) served off the same plate. This appeared to foster some basic cooperation and since then things have improved. Good luck! And be paitient!
Reply:I had a similar problem and had to take one of them to the vet and put him on Amiltriptyline (a pill also used for depression on people) to control his behavior. It has to be given in a cat dosage which means the capsule has to be opened to make lines and put the right dosage in wet cat food. Eventually he got used to other cats so I was able to take him off the pills.
Reply:Cats---Like special treatment and alot of attention---so make lily sleep with you and leave Jade outside until they get along
Reply:I wouldn%26#039;t worry about it too much. They will fight a bit, and then get over it. If you keep them apart they will never grow to accept each other.
Reply:well...i have had paeotee (female) since she was born and she was about a year old when we adopted boomer (male) boomer is fixed and pae isnt but they both have claws..we only seperated them for around maybe 2-3 days...they faught A LOT for the first 2-3 months... and pae is a teeny little cat and boomer weighs like 25 pounds...i wouldn%26#039;t worry too much...they will eventually get along once the dominance is set....and maybe there wont be dominance...my cats are equally mean to each other LOL...they still get into quarrels but they are cats...we still have to put one in the bathroom every once in a while when they fight real bad but its just what they do...good luck sweetie!
