My first cat was normal. Average weight, active, playful. Then I got another cat 2 years later. We adopted her from a friend, and she was very overweight, and we think she was abused.
We would feed them, and the new cat would try to eat my first cat%26#039;s food! So Lily [my first cat] would eat all of her food, so Lottie [my new cat] wouldn%26#039;t get any. She gained a lot of weight. I think they weigh around 15 lbs. We feed them 1/3 of a cup of food once in the morning, once at night, and half of that before we go to bed, and then a little bit if they are nagging us because they are hungry. I keep telling my mom we are feeding them way too much, and I don%26#039;t really know how much food we should give them and how many times a day. They are always hungry, and we feed them because they look so miserable, and hungry! How do I get them out of this habit of eating?!
The things I mostly need to know are:
•How much food should we feed them
•How many times a day they should be fed that amount
My cats are very overweight. I need help please!!?
If you havent talked to a vet, they will put your cats on a diet, they have specially made food for your cats. Feeding them separately is a good idea. Only feed your cats dry food. Wet food is high in sugar, fat and also your cats may not want dry food once they taste wet food. NO treats until your cat has reached a healthy weight. Get a laser pointer your cats will chase that for hours and give them good exercise. 1/2 cup of weight loss diet food twice a day separately should do the trick, but a vet will know best. if you cant afford to go, there are plenty of online vet resouce pages.
Reply:Hi try giving yur cat alean or eeight control cat food. there are low calorie treats out there as well.
Reply:I have always kept my cats dish 1/2 full of dry cat food.............they ate when they wanted to, snacking on their food several times a day........maybe this kept them from %26quot;wanting something they couldn%26#039;t have.%26quot; It may have also kept their metabolism active (several very small meals throughout the day instead of a few larger ones). I have never had an overweight cat. I%26#039;ve been a cat owner for 40+ years.....
Always keep a fresh dish of water available at all times also
Reply:My Grand Daughters have cats and the vet said to feed them 1/2 cup once a day at night. Ignore them if they act desperate as they will get used to the short rations. Feed them in separate rooms if one cat bullies the other and grabs all the food. Feed them good dry food and give plenty of water. Be sure not to leave any people food around as they will be hungry until the trim down and get used to the new diet.
Reply:i feed my cat about 1 1/2 cups of food a day, and sometimes half a can of canned food as a treat (she luvs that!)
because your cats always try to eat eachothers food, i would try putting their food bowls in seperate rooms. when its time to feed them, take them to their for bowls in the seperate roms. when they get used to it, they will go to the different rooms to eat on their own.
for the weight problem, try getting a special cat food meant for overweight cats. they carry it at most stores that sell pet food.

Hello! I assume your cat is eating dry food? Dry food for a cat that needs to lose weight is like a human going on a diet and eating cake, cookies, bread and doing it to about 39% of their meals.
Check the link at the top and pick out a good high protein and under 10% low carb diet. Only use fish 2 meals a week as it has to much phosphorus and not enough nutrition a cat needs. http://catinfo.org/ Will explain why your cat is an obligate carnivore and will be overweight etc from dry food.
I have seen many many people who have changed their cats to all wet canned food and the cats that are over weight lose weight and the over weight cats lose weight. Also after a few days they begin to eat less as the high protein is much more filling. The catinfo site I gave you is written by a Dr. of vet. Medicine and specializes soley in proper diets for all cats. She has devoted her life to saving cats lives and health.
I free feed my cat 24/7 and she eats often but once she reached her appropriate weight she has held it there.
I know cats in the wild kill the antelope and eat as much as the can in one feeding as it is impossible to graze on the food and many people stick to the 2 feedings a day. If you don%26#039;t want to leave food out you might give 3 feedings a day. My cat was rescued when about a year old weight was under a pound. She is frantic if no food is out. I give her probably 3/4 cup a day but take part of it and mash it with water. 1/3 cup wet food 1/4 cup water so she gets the water she needs but no cat drinks as much as they should.
http://www.catnutrition.org/obesity.php Excellent article here.
To me if you are feeding a good canned food I would think that the amounts you feed would be right.
Please check the sites I gave you and even though the Feline diabetic site says diabetic it is for all cats. Good Luck !

Reply:You should put the same amount of food BUT put the cats away from each other then the fat cat can stop eating the other cats food.
Reply:my cat weighs 22 pounds. feed your cats 1/3 to 1/4 can of cat food each ONCE a day. trust me on this one.
Reply:depending on what you are feeding them each cat should be feed 70-80grams of biscuits once a day and they can be left down all day with fresh water. i feed one double bowl of biscuits between three cats and one of them being a kitten this lasts from 11 pm last feed of the day until 11pm the next day. they also get four pouches of food between them equivilant of a tin a day. this is plenty for three cats. do not give in to sad faces. also speak to your vet about diet and getting them playing. i am owned by norwegian forest cats who when they finally finish growing particularly the toms will weigh in the region of 7kgs and the queen will weigh 5-6kg
Reply:somethign that could really really help is exercise.. playing a lot and that sort of thing.
They also make special formula cat foods for overweight cats, even stuff that you can get at a regular pet store if you dont want to go through a vet. But just like humans they need exercise :)
