Arrrrrrggggggghhh....jazz pirouettes?

Ok, so here%26#039;s my story. I have always been very good with turns. But a year and a half ago i had spinal surgery to correct scoliosis. i took that full year and a half off of dance and now that i%26#039;m back, i can still do fouette turns very well and almost perfectly most of the time. but i%26#039;m wondering why i can do those but i can%26#039;t manage to land a jazz SINGLE pirouette. my lyrical instructor was telling us to do doubles and i can%26#039;t even land a single. i know how to do it...pop your back leg, feet facing paralel to the front, shoulders and hips square and aligned. i prep, and then after i get about 3/4 around i fall over. my upper body is fine and i think my hips are even. i%26#039;ve been working on them all week and can%26#039;t figure out for the life of me what i%26#039;m doing wrong. i%26#039;m wondering if maybe it%26#039;s because although my spinal cord is now straight, my hips are still uneven. could that be throwing me off? or maybe my body is having trouble %26quot;remembeing%26quot; jazz pirouettes? any help?

thanks!

Lily

I%26#039;m sure that your body has changed and you will have to adjust your reflexes to the new body alignment as well as developing new muscles to hold your new alignment.

The thing I would suggest for your turns is to pull your upper body up out of your hips. This can be done by thinking about raising the rib cage forward and up, while keeping the shoulders relaxed. It can also be done by tucking the hips under and opening them up, but this is harder to understand without seeing it.

In any balance situation think %26quot;forward and up%26quot; take your weight forward and up.

You probably already know this and it is a matter of re-teaching your %26quot;new%26quot; body and developing new muscles.

Keep Dancing and practice, practice, practice.
Reply:I think its that you perfected it when yor%26#039;ue spin wasn%26#039;t corrected. And now you are trying to do it the same way and its just not working. I think that you need to re teach yourself how do to do it.

Throw all the old information about you%26#039;re pirouettes out the window and start from scratch.
Reply:I think you can do it i am 15 and have been dancing for 13 years...... I teach some local classes here in Maine. This is what I tell my students.

When you are in prep position. DO not try to wind yourself because that only makes it harder for you. When you wind up you build to much un wanted momentum in your upper body that you fall.

You must make sure you are holding your abs tight. When you are about to lift your foot up, tighten your butt muscles and hold them tight while turning spot and there you go most of my students can do doubles adn some triples so I hope this will help your technique. Remember make sure you got you spot. Always saves me..
