I know that these lilies are best planted in %26#039;moist%26#039; soil - can anyone tell me exactly how moist? Damp or soaking wet? I%26#039;ve planted some a few years ago in my garden that is quite well drained, and I%26#039;ve managed to get leaves, but no flowers.
This year, I%26#039;ve also planted some in a pot in the house with Fresia around them. The fresia are coming up well at the moment, but no sign of the Callas:(
Calla Lilies (Zantedeschia)?
They don%26#039;t need to be soaking wet and would rot like most bulbs if left in too damp a soil.
I grow mine in a hot dry climate up to 40 deg c in summer in the semi shade and find they do well in well drained soil that is regularly watered and not let to go completely dry.
Some of the old varieties (usually tall) are more robust than the newer ones with the brown/black, orange type colours. I find the older ones flower well after a few years of establishment. The newer shorter varieties are not nearly so prolific and I think they would be suited to shade or glass houses if you wanted many flowers.
I would get the tall dark yellow flowering variety with white spotted leaves if you want a hardy variety with lots of flowers. The leaves look good in a vase also.
Reply:In the garden a damp soil will be good for the Calla Lilies but not necessary too wet will damage the plant and too dry will also stunt and damage the plant. I have Calla Lilies in my moms yard and they don%26#039;t get a lot of water and they have been there for 12 years. Inside the house I wouldn%26#039;t worry with a lot of water just keep it moist. The Fresia don%26#039;t like as much water. Inside the home you will have to worry with mites and insects more than water
Reply:Damp, not wet. But when you do water, water deeply like you would a rose bush.

Reply:During growth water liberally, when you water think of it as a localized downpour, but apply a balanced fertilizer every 2 weeks until flowers fade. during winter the soil should be moist not watered.
