What's the most unusual plant/animal seen in your garden?

I have a small, newish (4 year old) garden on an estate in a medium sized town in middle England. Not much goes on in my garden but my soil supports beautiful Arum lilies without any care other than a drink in summer. Goldfinches and mistle thrushes are frequent visitors (I don't feed nyger seed). and occasionally a fox passes through.

What's the most unusual plant/animal seen in your garden?
I've seen a plant grow on a sandal
Reply:i found a dead magpie in my pool last summer! bloody big 1 too!!
Reply:I don't think any unusual plants have ever been there but the most intriguing was just to the side of my garden about 20 feet away I have a small wild flower butterfly garden that I let grow for the butterlies and ground cover for wildlife...I had a killdeer nest and everytime I went to the garden he would jump out and run around like she was injured.

Here is a link you can play for the sounds of a kill deer.

Reply:Most unusual plant would have to be the red and white mushroom. They are very cool looking: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fly_agaric

Most unusual animal would be...

a) my creepo neighbor ;) (long story) and

b) I get lots of animals but most unusual would probably be a badger: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badger (My regular visitors would be deer, quail, hare and tons of birds. My occasional visitors would be skunk, possums, fox, coyote and raccoons. The neighbor said he had mountain lion tracks on his property, luckily that was before we moved in!)

Fun question. :)
Reply:Like you I get Gold Finches in my garden, though last year we had a kestrol pop in, sitting on the clothes line, amongst other places.

I also grow palm trees, many from seed, and have a really good collection. My favourite one is the Blue Hesper palm, native to Mexico and elsewhere. http://www.mulu.co.uk/plant_info.php?id=... It's lived outside in my UK garden for the last 5 years or so, without protection.

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
Reply:Well, the only plant I can see when I look out my window is a power plant, so...
Reply:white squerril
Reply:since we move din we have 2 palm trees like the ones you get in the Caribbean growing they've managed to last 10 yrs or more depending on how long they were thee for when we moved in in this crappy English weather!
Reply:I live on the boundary of a nature reserve in South Africa so we have all of the usual big animals here .. I would die to see a real live possum or a hedgehog in my garden. One gets used to rhino, lion, elephant etc.

Met a long black mamba with unusual markings this morning if that can be viewed as exciting. I certainly got a rush.
Reply:We had a constant trail of frogs going through our house. In under the front door, through the lounge room into the dining room, around the corner into the kitchen, then around another corner to the back door. Under the back-door, down the steps, and into the backyard! None of them ever got lost and made a wrong turn!
Reply:A migrating snapping turtle crossing the lawn.
Reply:We live next to a conservation area so get lots of wildlife, the usual bunnies, badgers, foxes, hedgehogs and muntjack deer, woodpecker, squirrels, we even have a brown squirrel, that`s rare apparently. All the usual birds, blackbirds, thrush, pigeons, magpies, blue and great ****. I am so lucky
Reply:ive had a couple of very unusual insects, one was a black and yellow cricket-looking insect which was about an inch and a half long!!! no, i didnt touch it!!

the other was like a moth, gorgeous pink and black, again a fair size, width with wings spread roughly 4-5 inches and same again in length!

i think my neighbours must wonder what i am doing lying on the ground, but i was taking photos or trying!

p.s i am in a village in the country although this estate is approx 5 years old!
Reply:I once had a big ferret or polecat come into my garden, not sure where it came from.
Reply:Plant of Lily and animal are birds they have made nests in my garden
Reply:I have possums playing around my garden, they squash the small shrubs so they're going to be gone VERY soon!! But something I have never seen before until last month was a quail in my garden. I have never seen one before anywhere! It was really neat to see.
Reply:A black squirrel. I didnt even know they existed until I saw one!
Reply:There are trees, weeds, and lord knows what else growing in my uncle's boat that's been sitting in my yard for about 10 years. I saw a rat in it once - I don't like going near the boat for fear that an animal will jump out onto me.
Reply:A rattlesnake and some scorpions, when I lived in the desert. Now I live in the southeast and some blue skinks (lizards) reside in my garden.
