How Do I know I can sing?

I love singing, but I'm not sure if I can...I've been singing pop since I was 11 years old...every day...and I'm 13 now. I've done choir throughout my life, but my voice is a little high...does this mean I am not good? I recorded myself singing and the singer I most sound like is Vanessa Ann Hudgens, maybe a bit Lily Allen-Gwen Stefani-ish. Is this a good thing? When my sister heard me sing, she said I was an alto, which I take his a higher voice. My dad also said I was good...and if it helps any, I play guitar and write songs. My Dad's side of the family is very musical. If I AM no good, how can I get better...I'm very confused! Could I continue singing ska pop or do I have to be an opera singer?

How Do I know I can sing?
It seems like people are appearing on the pop scene younger and younger. this may be good for that style, but I wouldn't know that. What I do know, is that at 13, your body is not yet finished growing, and that includes your larynx, or voice box. When that is fully grown then your voice will start to settle into its adult range. I know of young ladies who are able to start singing lessons for classical training by age 16, but that's probably still too early. An operatic voice is not miked, after all, and all that sound has to come from inside you. That takes at least 4 years of training, and often more. There is no end point, no diploma that says one is ever really finished with training. Most professional opera singers still check in with a teacher or coach once a month to make sure no bad habits creep in, and that's in addition to the everyday practice sessions they do themselves ( if they're honest about it)

Enjoy what you are doing now, and be ready to accept the changes that come with puberty. Men's voices take longer to adjust ( at least we don't have as drastic a voice change as they do), but we do have new boundaries set for us as we mature physically. Please continue to write songs, play guitar and sing.

Discuss singing lessons with your folks. If they are so musically inclined, they will probably support you in this matter, as it shows a more than usual interest.

Best wishes and keep singing
Reply:sing whatever you like! An alto is the lower end of a female voice, like Karen Carpenter, Marilyn McCoo, etc.

Next high would be 2nd soprano, then the 1st soprano.

Find where your voice lies, see a piano teacher and they can map out your range.

Don't stop singing!
Reply:well i've been singing since i was two. and now im thirteen. i sing pop too. i think its easier. stick with pop
Reply:Pose a video of you singing! I would love to hear you!

Continue singing, if it's what you like yto do I say go for it! You've got a chance, now make it happen!!
Reply:Well, since you love singing so much, you could go to an arts school or ask your music teacher at school to tell you if your voice is correct.

It doesn't matter who you resemble when you sing. What matters is if your voice is good.

Having a high voice means that you are a soprano and not an alto and no, it doesn't matter that it is high.

Being high or low has nothing to do with how good of a singer you are.

As for what kind of music you should sing, that is really up to you. What are your preferences? When do you feel whole and happy? Answer those questions and you'll know the kind of music that it's for you.

Good luck with whatever you choose.
