Harry Potter question?

Harry witnessed his parents' death, right? Or at least Lily's. Well, if he saw his parents die, then how come he couldn't see thestrals in his first four years at Hogwarts?

Harry Potter question?
Agree with above.

There are no gaps in J.K.Rowlings writting. The movies Depict different situations to the books. I think u ll find by thinking Harry actually witnessed the death of his mother, Lily is a result of seeing it put in front of you in the movie.

The book, u may see if u go back to it, never actually says Harry seen Lily die.

Reply:well they didn't concentrate on what is drawing the carriage earlier.
Reply:I wondered this too when i first read the 5th book :)

Its because also he was too young to remember his parents death and he didnt understand that his parents died you see, Its like when you were a baby you cant remember things before you were at least three, yet alone understand that when someone falls to the floor not breathing, that maybe theyre dead. but then he saw cedric digory die, and he understood that he died, harry was told that his parents were murdered, he wouldnt have known otherwise.
Reply:Harry was asleep Lily ran toward Harry and Vol. told her to get out of the way in the book she is not carring himshe is btw. Harry and Vol. so Harry only HEARD Lily scream thats when he woke up.
Reply:First, he didn't see the Thestrals until his Fifth year, and only because he'd seen death up close, ie Cedric. Secondly, he was only a baby and the movies actually make it seem like he saw them, but he actually didn't. All he remembers is a green flash of light.
Reply:It's simply because he doesn't really remember his parents death, well really Lily's. All he remembers is green flashes of light and cruel laughter. He saw Cedric's death up quite close the night Cedric was murdered thats why Harry cud c the thestrals at the beginning of his fifth year, he had seen death up very close and it was still fresh in his mind.
Reply:i've asked myself that question as well, so I have 2 theories.

1) Harry didn't see Lily die because he was in the crib

I don't think this is likely because I think she was standing right in front of the crib when protecting him from Voldemort.

2) Harry was so young that he didn't understand what happened when his mother died, therefore he didn't "experience" her death.

I think in order to see the thestrals you would have to fully experience seeing someone die, as in comprehend what happened. So Harry couldn't see them until after Cedric was killed next to him in the graveyard.

Or... its a bit of a plot hole, haha :-)
