Starting to act?

I live in Portland OR, and have participated in high school theatre, (I'm 15 years old) and I have NO clue how to get into the film acting business! I have submitted myself to many acting websites, but a lot of them want credit card numbers, and my parents are too nervous to release them. Also, we aren't made out of money, and I would most likely be paying for everything, so nothing to expensive. I really don't care if it is modeling either, I just need to get a foot in the door, and I could use some advice!

Thank you so much,

Lily

First off, you should NEVER have to pay for anything. If an agent tells you to take special classes from them or a website asks for a credit card number, that is a red flag that it is a SCAM.

It's very good you've done theater in school, the more the better. Basically you'll want to use these years (Until you're out of high school.) to get as much experience as possible. Do community/school theater, take any and all acting/dancing/singing/modeling classes you can, etc. Then when you have some experience and talent, get an agent. This site will help you:

Good luck in whatever you do.
Reply:Agree with Elphaba. Pay for *nothing* except maybe your headshots, if you really need them.

First off, be aware that you are at exactly the "wrong" age. :( You know Ellen Page? Well she can play Juno at age 21/22 and therefore, she can work 14+ hour days. SAG puts a lot of restrictions on hiring people under age 18. That's why you see the callboards saying "18 and over." It's not that they're movies with adult content, it is just far more cost effective to hire that way. Look at all the ridiculous "high school" movies and take a close look at all those faces. Zac Efron is an exception at being a real teen.

However, I think you might want to be an extra in something, just for fun, and for the experience and possible connections. Extras roles are a lot easier to come by.

In Portland, let's see. Check out who was the casting director for "Paranoid Park" - Lana Veeneker. She has a great / phenomenal website about how to communicate with casting directors. There's also a guy in PDX and I forget his name. Danny Stoltz? Look on imdbpro.com (free 10-day subscription) and look up films that have shot in Portland.

Also you could keep your eye on the callboards in Seattle, if your parents are agreeable to letting you work there, say in the summer. (I think there is less work in Seattle than in Portland, though)

Good luck and don't spend any money :)
