What is a safe aquatic plant for my betta bowl?

I have a vase with a peace lily and my betta. I maintain it by cleaning the bowl and feeding my fish 2 times a day. He (the betta) is now over 2 years old but my plant is beginning to die. Is there a better plant for this set up? non-toxic?

Those miniature peace lillies are great. Not only are they pretty, the fish can eat off of the roots. I would recommend getting another one of those.

PS. Did you know that you can teach them to jump half out of the water!? I have done it with all of my bettas. Hold something shiny over the bowl and get their attention. They will jump at it after a while, and as soon as they do, throw them a pellet! You would be suprised how quick they learn. I know that has nothing to do with your question but I thought that a fellow betta owner might be interested.
Reply:Most aquarium plants need light.
Reply:Well, if your fish has been living for 2 years with that lily and the lily is dying, I think you should throw the flower out and get a new flower -the exact same kind- and put it in the bowl, or vase, again.
Reply:How about going with a better set-up rather than another plant. It's amazing that you've kept him alive this long, kudos on that, but bettas in vases are a very bad idea and cruel to the fish. I'm going to assume that since he is still living that you know he is carnivorous and have been feeding him accordingly. (Many people don't realize this and they think that he can live off the roots of the plant, he will for a short while, but he will slowly starve to death.) Also, I'm guessing you kept up with your water changes every other day or even everyday, they are very sensitive to nitrites and ammonia.

My advice on this is to get your betta a 2.5 gallon set-up with a heater and filter. Buy him some java moss or java fern. They are wonderful for filtering out nitrites, and will help keep your betta healthy. Also, this set-up will be less maintenance as far as water changes go. Maybe taking it down to once a week to every 2 weeks.

Please, for your betta's sake, don't keep him in the vase any longer than it takes you to get him a better home. At this point, seeing as he has hung on for so long in such a poor environment, he deserves some relaxation in his own wonderful, upgraded tank!

I hope I have enlightened you a little and that you decide to upgrade your little friend's home!
Reply:Don't give up on your plant yet!
